What is a Browser?

An interesting video. I don't usually put a lot of stock in 'man on the street' interviews, but this one comes with statistics from the questioner. Fewer than 8% of those asked knew what a browser is.

What makes this interesting for me (besides the obvious, being a web designer) is the fact that virtually everybody who was asked 'what is a browser?' didn't know...despite using a browser on a regular basis. Computers used to be the sort of thing that only technically-inclined people could use, and most people had no reason to have a computer. Now, most people in the US are online...and they're able to use a browser fairly efficiently without even knowing they're doing it. Technology has indeed come a long way.

A browser, by the way, is simply a computer program that lets you look at web pages. If you don't have a browser, you can't browse (or surf) the internet. The most common browsers include Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. Chrome, which is Google's new browser, is still too new to have gained many followers. Which browser do I use? All of them. As a web designer, I have to make sure my websites look right and work properly for everybody, which means I have to see those pages like others do.
