My Changes to the Federal Budget

Thu, Jul 29 2010 - 16:41 PM

Recently, in a discussion about economics, I was asked this question: "What specific cuts to the federal budget would you make?". Of course I'm not an expert on government spending, so I couldn't bring solid statistics (specifics) to bear here. I can, however, point to some very sound logical starting points. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these...and please remember that they're not the result of hours of serious study. I wrote them off the top of my head, so they're neither complete nor per...

Illegal Immigration & the Declaration of Independence

Thu, Jul 29 2010 - 11:02 AM

Our Declaration of Independence clearly states that our rights are not given by government, but by God. It is for that reason that we consider them INALIENABLE. Neither our government nor our citizens are free to infringe on these rights because they are not granted, they are recognized. It also clearly states that governments are created to SECURE these rights...that is, to make sure that our inalienable rights are not infringed upon. The power to secure these rights, it says, comes from "the ...

The Current State of Economics in the European Union (Subtitle: Tell me you didn't see this one coming from the very beginning)

Tue, Jun 8 2010 - 01:23 AM

Mrs. GodWords and I cut up our credit cards in 1990. Yes, I know that was before some of you were born...but it wasn't before we were born. We'd been married a year, and already felt that we were out of control with our spending. No, we hadn't racked up $50,000 in credit card debt. It was just a few thousand, but we - being a youth minister and a school teacher - knew that we needed to change our ways if we were to avoid more trouble. We went to a debt counseling service, and someone helped us ...

Cass Sunstein wants to mandate links on private websites

For those who don't know, Cass Sunstein is the Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs for President Barack Obama. That means that he advises the President on matters relating to information, and on matters where government regulates private citizens. For those who don't know, Cass Sunstein is a pretty radical dude. No, I don't mean "radical" like "that's rad" but like "that's bad". His ideas threaten to infringe the rights of individuals like few othe...

Calling Out Keith Olbermann

Tue, Feb 23 2010 - 13:58 PM

Hypocrisy is a bad thing. Yeah, it's always bad, all the time, no matter what. Everyone (myself included) can be rightly accused of hypocrisy at some point. It's not a laughing matter. What is usually a laughing matter, however, is when someone's blatant and self-righteous hypocrisy is exposed. That happens in this video. Keith Olbermann accused the Tea Party folks of being all-white like Weird Al eating a mayonnaise sandwich on Wonder bread, and this is the Dallas Tea Party's response. I...

Did you know that it could be a federal offense to be in possession of a lobster? I first saw this video in 2008. It's long...about as long as a TV show without commercials. It's as compelling, in my opinion, as anything I've seen on Law & Order in the past few years. Here's a quick rundown of what you'll see and hear: Regardless of ...

A long, long time ago when I was young, I read some books about climate change. I doubted the conclusions drawn by the authors. Even as a kid, I could tell the difference between the facts and the conclusions drawn from those facts. We were shown movies of what 'life will be like' when the climate finished...

2nd Grader's Art Labeled Violent

Tue, Jan 12 2010 - 13:49 PM

When will it end? Little kids are too often targeted by 'zero tolerance' policies at public schools. On December 2nd, a Massachusetts second-grader was sent home for drawing a picture. His teacher considered the drawing "violent". A psychological evaluation was ordered, and the child couldn't return to school until he was cleared. Why did the teacher (and his administrators) consider the drawing violent? Why was the second-grader kicked out of school? Take a look at the picture: Really? Are...

NJ Says No to Gay Marriage

Fri, Jan 8 2010 - 11:58 AM

Gay rights advocates pushed hard to get it to pass, since Governor John Corzine (D) promised to sign it if it passed. Incoming governor Chris Christie (R) has promised to veto such a bill, should it reach his desk. So, for the foreseeable future, New Jersey will not have gay marriage. New Jersey already offers civil unions the same rights as marriage. Five ...

Follow-Up: Brit Hume Stands Firm on Tiger

That, of course, made more than a few people angry with Brit Hume. In response, Hume appeared on The O'Reilly Factor for some questions about his response. Not only did he not back down, he was more specific about his suggestion that Tiger might find what he needs in following Jesus Christ. After the...

On a recent Sunday-morning news show, the question was asked whether Tiger can recover. Brit Hume provided a very specific and apparently-controversial opinion. I applaud Brit for speaking his mind unashamedly. Whether one agrees with him ...

How Should Christians Think about Abortion?

Because of the recent American elections, I've had a number of conversations about issues like abortion, and have come to realize that there's a lot of 'fuzzy thinking' out there. This is one of my replies from a recent 'fuzzy' discussion: When it comes to abortion, the issue is often divided into two groups: arguments about how to avoid abortion, and arguments about what to do about unwanted pregnancy. That sometimes causes people to argue badly, because they're not really communicating about ...

Mon, Jun 23 2008 - 19:05 PM

Comedy legend and social commentator George Carlin passed away yesterday. He was 71 years old, and as insightful as ever. Despite his increasingly angry tone toward the end of his career, I still love his work. One of his better-known bits was known as Baseball and Football...and it's one of my favorites. It's posted below, for your enjoyment. Nobody could break it down like George could.Tonight's forecast: Dark. Continued dark throughout most of the evening, with some widely-scattered light tow...

George Will on The Colbert Report

Wed, Jun 4 2008 - 13:26 PM

I like George Will. He makes a lot of sense. In last night's Colbert Report, George outlined the difference between a liberal and a conservative viewpoint. Keep in mind that George makes such statements from a conservative point of view...and let me know if you disagree.Conservatives tend to favor freedom and are willing to accept inequalities of outcome in the free market. Liberals tend to favor equality of outcome and are willing to sacrifice and circumscribe freedom to get it....

Maria Sue Chapman 2003 - 2008

Thu, May 22 2008 - 11:28 AM

Please join me in prayer for those close to the family of Steven Curtis Chapman. Bad news just arrived from their manager:"Last night Maria Sue Chapman, adopted and youngest daughter of Mary Beth & Steven Curtis Chapman, was killed in a tragic accident in the family driveway. She was LifeFlighted to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital but for only reasons God can explain she went home to Him... not back to Franklin as we all so desperately wanted.""We are all humbled by the incredible outpouring ...

Are You Proud of Your Country?

Fri, May 16 2008 - 09:57 AM

America has a lot of problems. I don't know anyone who would say otherwise...and honesty about America's problems is a requirement for solving them. One of the main problems that I have with politically liberal Americans is that, in an effort to speak honestly about America's problems, many of them speak dishonestly about what America has done right. This video contrasts the comments of Michelle Obama, who wants to be America's First Lady, with comments from conservative Americans in Tennessee. It...

I'm Baaaaack

Tue, May 13 2008 - 09:06 AM

After a much-needed vacation in Seattle to visit my family, I'm back at home now. I'd planned to work while I was there, but my working vacation somehow lost the 'working' part. I had fun with the fam, and spent yesterday catching up on a lot of email. I'm still a bit behind schedule on my work, so posting might not be at its usual breakneck pace...but I'll do my best to keep you informed....

Sorry for the slowdown in posting. I'm visiting family in Seattle, and having a good time. I'm staying up way too late, eating badly, and not working very much. I'm not sure I'm going to get around to posting anything this week, unless something significant strikes me just right.Drop me a line and let me know how much you miss me...maybe I'll set aside some special time to post just for you!...

Harry Reid on Taxes: They're Voluntary

Sat, Apr 19 2008 - 10:08 AM

The US government spends $25,100 per year per U.S. household. $21,600 of that is financed through tax collections, while the remaining $3,500 is borrowed. It's no wonder many Americans are finding it difficult to make ends meet...our government can't do it either.I'd like to opt out of that $3,500. You know, the one that America keeps borrowing. As anyone over the age of 21 knows, deficit spending is a stupid idea...but we keep electing politicians who don't seem to mind.If you'd like to opt out...

Is Expelled being Suppressed?

Sat, Apr 19 2008 - 04:18 AM

I've blogged before about the new movie on the Darwinism/Intelligent Design debate, Expelled. Now it appears that some people may not want the movie's message to get out.Premise Media created the documentary, and they've filed a lawsuit against a company called XVIVO, LLC. Premise has been accused of copyright infringement, and they're calling the allegations spurious.According to a CCM Magazine article, there's also a grassroots effort to mess with the search rankings of website that talk about...

Expelled: It's Almost Time

Thu, Apr 17 2008 - 17:38 PM

It's almost time to get Expelled. Ben Stein narrates this 'super trailer' for the upcoming movie, opening this weekend. No matter which side of the Darwinism/Intelligent Design aisle you're now on, this movie will probably be worth your time. Despite the movie's YEC (young-earth creationism) position (one that I don't share) I feel that the message of the movie is at least as important as anything Michael Moore has done. Why? Because nobody should be afraid of the truth. No, I'm not talking about...

Genetic Humor?

Wed, Apr 9 2008 - 17:37 PM

Doesn't the Discovery Channel have a proofreader? I spent a few minutes reading an article there today, titled Ancient Humor: Raunch, Riddles and Religion. I found it interesting, for the most part. I have no problem with the idea that humanity's sense of humor goes back tens of thousands of years, or that the appearance of humor seems to coincide with the appearance of religious artifacts. That's all good. What bugs me are some of the stupid statements that supposedly intelligent people, writin...

A Pregnant Man?

Mon, Apr 7 2008 - 15:32 PM

Dishonesty is generally defined as "lacking truthfulness". Most people consider dishonesty to be a bad thing. Here are a couple of examples of dishonesty I found in the news recently:An AOL Newsblogger titled her story Meet Thomas Beatie, The First Pregnant Man. She went on to say "For real. A man named Thomas Beatie is going to have a baby". A Belfast Telegraph article reads like this: "A US man who is six months pregnant has spoken out on The Oprah Winfrey Show...".Now, we all know that there'...

Yahoo's New Site for Women: Shine

Mon, Mar 31 2008 - 11:16 AM

Today, Yahoo launched a new site aimed at women ages 25 to 54. It's called Shine. It seems to me (a man in that age group) that the bad part of this site is that it's very general...it's aimed at all women in that group. If you're not a foodie, not a celeb-seeker, and not a horoscope reader, you still have to slog past the stuff. Several niche sites probably serve individual women better than one giant, general site.It seems to me (a man in that age group) that the good part of this site is that...

Communism and Homeschools

Mon, Mar 17 2008 - 11:03 AM

One of the 10 planks of the Communist Manifesto is free education for all children in public schools. America has done a good job of providing a free education for all children in public schools, of course.Does that mean that American leaders are interested in establishing communism in the land of the free? This quote, from a recent ruling against homeschooling in California, sure makes it sound that way:A primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship,...

Expelled Update

Fri, Mar 7 2008 - 12:53 PM

I just got an email from the Expelled movie folks. Here's what they had to say...I thought you might be interested as well:This movie won't feature 'creative editing' to make its point, unlike Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine. The audience at the Kansas City premiere apparently loved it.The movie will open nationwide on April 18. Here's an interesting tidbit from the email that surprised me:To Stein’s astonishment, Dawkins concedes that life might indeed have a designer but that designer ...

Expelled Movie Trailer

Anybody up for a good controversy? Anybody? Bueller?Ben Stein is pretty well-known. Lots of people recognize him, even if it's just for his Visine commercials. What a lot of people don't know is that he has a degree in economics from Columbia and a law degree from Yale. They don't know that he's authored many books and has been a contributor and a columnist for just about every major publication in the US. He's an actor and a game show host. He's taught at a number of universities. He was a spee...

This doesn't really belong in the News category at all, but there are probably a few GodWords readers who haven't read anything about it. You see, I studied both religion and philosophy in college (along with a couple of aimless years studying broadcasting)...so philosophical ideas and people interest me. Antony Flew is a philosopher. Until recently, he'd been a very well-respected and influential atheist. No, he hasn't been discredited for living a double life or anything...he's still well-resp...

Denver #1 for Lust?

Sometimes I'm surprised, sometimes I'm not. This time, I'm not really surprised. We all like to see our cities on lists of "best places to live" or "favorite getaway destinations"...but who wants to see their city on a list of "most sinful"?Forbes.com has published an interesting set of statistics in the form of a pretty map, showing which US cities are the most sinful. They're using the "seven deadly sins", and statistics relating to crime, obesity, etc. Apart from the obvious difficulty correl...

How many Bibles do you have?

Sat, Feb 16 2008 - 11:46 AM

How many? 4? 5? I'm sure that I have at least a half-dozen in a box in the garage. Apparently, the average American Christian has 9 (nine) Bibles, and is on the lookout for another. I rarely touch a paper Bible anymore. Because I spend so much time in front of my computer, I find it easier to use a digital version. There are plenty to choose from. I tend to use Bible Gateway because it's quick and easy. I haven't touched a concordance in years, since digital Bibles allow for comprehensive search...
